How Medicines Were Made

Curious Encounters
Get an up-close look at a few of the interesting items in the museum’s collection. Try to guess what each was used for, then learn the history behind the artifact, and learn about advances in science and medicine. (45-60 minutes)
Soda Fountain Science
Did you know that Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Rootbeer were all invented as treatments by pharmacists? Learn some of the history behind soda pop, and the science that makes it work. (45-60 minutes)
Truth in Advertising
How were people convinced to buy medicines that had little to no effect, but claimed to cure everything? And why did they buy them more than once? Does this still happen today? Look at ads from the past and from today, and make your own decisions. (45-60 minutes)
Guided Tour
Included in each of the above programs is a guided tour through the Hook’s Historical Drug Store and Pharmacy Museum. The museum depicts an 1890’s era pharmacy, and includes the medicines, tools, and cabinetry from that time period. An ice cream treat is included at the end of each tour. Groups have the option of having the gift shop open during their visit. (45-60 minutes)
Each of the programs offered at the Hook’s Historical Drug Store and Pharmacy Museum can be adjusted to accommodate different age groups. Due to the nature of our programs, we advise limiting groups to 2nd grade age level and up.
